Base work starting to pay off...

Ever since I started back on my IronMan training schedule in October 2007, I have kept all my speeds (swim, bike, run) very low in order to keep my heart rate low. For the most part on my run I have been keeping my heart rate in the 135 to 145 range. This would occur when I had the treadmill set to 5.5 mph or 11 minute miles.

Over the last 2-3 weeks I've noticed that my heart rate was starting to show up in the 125-129 range from time to time. This was my first indication that the base training was starting to pay off -- my pace was exactly the same but my heart rate was slowly moving down.

Last week I started picking up my pace on the treadmill -- now going 6 mph or 10 minute miles. My heart rate moves up the chart a few ticks, but still in that 140 to 145 range.

My plan for the Cincinnati Marathon in May is to try and maintain a 10 minute mile pace for the entire Marathon. Last year for the Green Bay Marathon I had a 10:15 pace with almost perfect splits (off just a few ticks from keeping that same pace for the whole deal). Even though I hope to keep the 10 minute pace -- my one and only goal will be to complete the Marathon with a smile on my face. I'm not one to worry about the time plus I'm getting a bit too old for that.

So, it does feel good seeing the progress in the Base training...

Great going, I know its really satisifying when you see your hard work paying off. So many times you struggle to see any improvement.
