Last year I spent many many hours in the pool trying to learn how to swim -- many laps just trying to get my breathing down. For me, this was very hard from the "boring" side of things. I would swim at least 40 laps each time and a few times I swam 60 laps. It isn't that the 40 or 60 laps was all that long (about 45 minutes to just over an hour) -- but instead it was just soooo boring. In an attempt to make it a bit better, I purchased a Swimp3 -- which allows me to listen to music while I swim.
The good news this year is the fact that I do know how to swim and I know I can swim the 2.4 miles required for IronMan Louisville (have swam that distance at least 7 times). Based on those facts, I have decided to start my swimming training for IronMan Louisville 2008 a bit different from last year. This year I'm going to start by only swimming 10 laps (500 yds) a swim session for the first month or so. This won't do much for my swimming endurance, but it will allow me to work on my stroke a bit and make it much easier to get myself to the pool.
Then over the next few months, I'll increase my laps by 5 (250 yds) every couple of weeks until I hit the 40 lap mark. At that point I'll stay at 40 laps per swim session until I hit the open water season -- then I can increase the distance to the 2.4 miles.
Just the plan as it stands now -- of course, subject to change without notice...
