Starting IronMan 2009 training…

So, today was the first day back on the IronMan training program. Sure, it is very early to start thinking about IronMan in September of 2009 – but basically I now go back on a weekly schedule. Ever since IronMan Louisville 2008, I’ve been on an every other day 3 mile run schedule. Now I’ll be on an 8 hour a week schedule for a month or so and then slowly build from there.

Last week we spent our time at the Cottage doing some hiking in the Door County area. We spent an afternoon at Newport State Park hiking through the woods and along the shores of Lake Michigan. Halloween evening we attended the “Cottage” street party at a neighbors house. The road that the Cottage is on is only about 2 miles long with no thru traffic, so it makes a very fun trick or treat location for the kids.

At the party, I met the rock star IronMan neighbor. He is the gentleman that finished the Door County Half-IronMan in 2nd place with a time of 5:02 (I was extremely happy is my 6:03). He is also about 20 minutes short of being a Kona qualifier. All this said, you’d never guess that he was an IronMan. Very nice guy wearing a sweater chasing his girls around the house. He said that last year was his best year to date and he tried a new method. Instead of long runs, bikes, swims – he did extremely hard workouts instead. He suggested that we do some rides this coming summer seeing that he is also going to do IronMan Wisconsin 2009. Seeing that his IronMan bike times are around 5:30’s (and mine are 7:00++++) – I might need to take the car to keep up...

Hanging out with a guy faster than you may be just what the doctor ordered.

Push you to the next level..or the hospital!

Sounds like he will be a great training partner. You'll be ready to kick his butt by next summer.
