Ok, so a few years back I decided it would be better to start an exercise habit then it would be to cut back on my eating. So, I started running.
Soon that turned into running Marathons and now competing in IronMan’s. Along the way I also decided to compete in the Pump –n Run which has me lifting weights three (3) times a week.
So, wouldn’t you think that after all this – I would be RIPPED? I remember training for the first Marathon thinking, holy smokes by the time I’m done with this Marathon my “belly” will be gone, the love handles will go away, and I’ll be what my son calls “Buff”.
Well, I have some bad news for you folks that think a Marathon or an IronMan is going to get you Ripped – it doesn’t happen. Maybe if you start young before your body has settled into the “look”, then maybe you can beat the fat with some muscle.
I was never that big – my max weight was probably around the 190 range (6ft+) and most of my life I was considered skinny. But I can tell you that even though my mid-section is smaller – it did not go away. My legs on the other hand are kind of ripped – just not that “big” ripped look – more of the skinny ripped look (if there is anything like that).
Now, as far as my arms and my chest since my strength training program started – ya, my arms feel a little bigger and my chest is a bit larger. But still completely unnoticeable to all and you would never guess that I actually new what an Olympic weight set was. The only thing that may be occurring is the slight “man boobs” caused by the slight increase in the chest muscles – need to re-watch that Seinfeld issue with Kramer’s ‘The Bro”.
So, after hours and hours of work – the body feels great, my health is awesome, my cholesterol is fabulous, my mental state is great, but my body still looks like “my body”.
So much for having that “IronMan” body – instead I just have the finisher’s medal…

Oh, do I know what you're talking about! I thought Ironman would transform me, too...but not so much. Feeling strong and fit, though, is almost enough.
We can't have everything. But it sounds like you have the things that matter.
