Today we attended the Athlete's race meeting at our hotel. During the meeting the speaker explained that the swim start would be a "time trial" start -- meaning one at a time every 3 seconds. He suggested if you need more time to make cut-offs, you should come early. Last year it took 37 minutes to get all swimmers in the water.
So, based on that -- my plan will be to come a little later in the morning. This will allow me an extra hour of sleep and then I will hopefully be with more swimmers of my pace (turtle type of speed). I do not want to go out ahead of the fast swimmers and spend my time getting run over. I'll try to get in the water towards the half of the back pack.
We also attended the Gatorade Practice swim in the Ohio River. I was interested in feeling the current of the river and how it would affect my swim speed (with my slow speed, thought it'd be just like a Endless Pool -- never move out of my spot) -- I felt no current either way. The majority of the swim is down stream, so I'll just pretend that it is helping me.
Nice easy run to the swim start and back to the hotel -- around 3 miles.

Last year - it really spread out and the "turtle type" swimmers were throughout the swim. I think they may actually have been near the front, in order to get that extra time.
Have fun!
They do this same kind of start at Lifetime Fitness in Minneapolis, and is spreads out really quickly - whether there are turtles or rabbits around you, it's kind of a non-issue. Don't know how different that would be with 2500 swimmers, but just FYI.
Good luck dude - rest up and enjoy the next few days!!!
Hey GoMomGo & XT4,
Excellent information. Now, seeing that -- I think I'll get in line a bit earlier. Might as well have a bit more time for the cut-offs.
Thanks!!
